Talk (And Dress?) Like A Pirate Day 2014

Arr! It be that time again! Talk Like A Pirate Day!

This year Bingles in 3 states celebrated TLAPD not only by talking like pirates but even dressing like them.

Cap’n Rich prompted the following missive from an officer in the Royal Navy:

We need the K-9 unit dispatched to 1120 please.

The “Cap’n” may be enticed to leave the premise by placing Solaris scripting books or chicken wings in the parking lot. Don’t be alarmed about the apparent firearm as it’s been identified as the make shift window handle from the Telecom equipment van. Please do recover the key as it needs to be returned to a nearby 7-11 so they can regain access to the men’s restroom.

Bingles Survive Earthquake Less Than Twenty Miles From Epicenter

Okay, so it was an Illinois earthquake, only 4.3 on the Richter Scale, but it was just east-northeast of Dekalb, so not that far from us.  It hit at almost exactly 4 a.m., waking Linda, the puppies, and YES even me.  It was a sharp boom and a shudder and knocked a few things off shelves.  Most people who have described it on the news here say they thought a snowplow had hit their house–which is a thought that eventually occurred to me after Linda dismissed my wind/microburst suggestion–we were in the middle of about 8 inches of snow last night.  She also suggested earthquake as a possibility, but I was drifting back to sleep by that point.

So far no damage, no injuries reported.  And, by the way, we do have earthquake insurance.  It is supercheap here (more expensive on Kauai, but we got it there, too, along with hurricane insurance).  Some day the New Madrid fault downstate will go big time–so why not have the insurance?

Don and Linda Downunder

In January, we went to Australia and New Zealand with our friends Dewey and Cheryl Frech. Since the Frechs had never been to Australia, they decided to go a day earlier so they could spend more time around Sydney. Weather intervened and they arrived within a half and hour of us. Of course, that was still three days ahead of our luggage. Despite the problems, we had a fine time, going out with a bird guide the second day, then boarding the cruise ship, spending a day in Sydney, then on to Melbourne and Hobart (Tasmania) in Australia, then three days at sea before hitting the fjords on the southwest coast of New Zealand (it rained. . .er. . .was ethereal) with stops after on the east side of New Zealand at Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, and Auckland. We then rented a car for a couple days and went to Waitomo Caves and saw the geothermal stuff at Rotorua. Along the way we saw lots of birds (including blue and yellow-eyed penguins), seals, sea lions, miniature dolphins, and plenty of wild scenic. We also went on a jet boat ride, rode in giant atvs around up and down the steep coast of New Zealand, and had a very nice time.
