Orlando Bingles’ Western Adventure: Day 8

It’s still hot!
Karen was interested to see what was on the other side of the hill from the cove where we had beached the houseboat, so we decided to take a hike before it got too hot. We zig-zagged our way up the hill and soon discovered why we had heard people on shore the night before. It turns out that we had beached just over the hill from a parking area for a swim beach. I’m pretty sure much of the swim beach was now 40 feet or more above the water line as there definitely wasn’t much of a beach where we were tied up, and it would explain why we had seen the “No Wake Zone” buoys the day before (and why one of them was well up on dry land).
As I noted above, it was hot and after some pictures from the top of the hill back down towards the houseboat, we decided that our little hike was over and we headed back down. As we headed down, we noticed that helicopters were heading from the west of us, flying almost directly overhead, and passing to the east. Apparently we were on the helicopter tour route from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. They were generally high enough that it didn’t really bother us. We were pretty hot and sweaty from our little trek, so we spent some time cooling off in the water before lunch.
We spent the hottest part of the day inside (in the air conditioning), including a game of Carcassonne (I barely beat Amber) and then headed back into the water for a couple of hours before dinner. The water was refreshing compared to the heat, but every once in a while you’d find a really cold spot while you were floating around. We blew up the inflatable boat we had brought along and the girls had fun paddling it around in the cove near the boat.
Alyssa wanted to play games after dinner so we ended up playing “random” charades and “Pig” which is basically “Spoons” without the spoons. Instead of grabbing a spoon when you get four of a kind, you make a pig nose (we chose the fist in front of the nose option rather than the push up the tip of your nose option). We ended up playing for quite a while before calling it a night.
Next stop, another day on Lake Mead!
