Story in Future Americas Coming in June

by Don and Linda Bingle on May.14, 2008, under Donald Bingle, Donald Bingle Family

I’ve got a new story, “Attached to the Land,” coming out in Future Americas from DAW in June.  Here’s what the cover looks like:

I originally wrote this story for a magazine that was running a pessimistic sci-fi story set in the near future in which the west was ravaged by drought and fire and was specifically looking for a companion story about how the west could have a brighter future.  The magazine was paying a good price and got a fair number of submissions from sci-fi’s finest, but decided not to run any of their stories because they didn’t find any scenario for a rosy future for the west to have sufficient credibility.   Somehow I think that they were inclined that way from the start and they just wasted a bunch of writers’ time.  Determined to make use of the story, I sent it to John Helfers, who works for the company that packages DAW anthologies, and he just happened to have this spot where it fit.

Yet another story coming out in July. . .

by Don and Linda Bingle on Apr.21, 2008, under Donald Bingle, Donald Bingle Family

Don has a new story, titled “Homo,” coming out May 6 in the DAW anthology Front Lines, edited by Denise Little.  Here’s a picture of the cover:

Don also has new stories coming out in June, July, and probably in December.  He is also just finishing up writing stories for two additional anthologies, “Zombie Racoons and Killer Bunnies” and “Gamer Fantastic,” but, even if accepted, those stories probably won’t come out til 2009 or 2010.  Turnaround is pretty slow on these things.  The story coming out in May was originally written by me in May of 2006 on three days notice.

Don and Linda Downunder

by Don and Linda Bingle on Mar.08, 2008, under Donald Bingle, Donald Bingle Family, Linda Bingle

In January, we went to Australia and New Zealand with our friends Dewey and Cheryl Frech. Since the Frechs had never been to Australia, they decided to go a day earlier so they could spend more time around Sydney. Weather intervened and they arrived within a half and hour of us. Of course, that was still three days ahead of our luggage. Despite the problems, we had a fine time, going out with a bird guide the second day, then boarding the cruise ship, spending a day in Sydney, then on to Melbourne and Hobart (Tasmania) in Australia, then three days at sea before hitting the fjords on the southwest coast of New Zealand (it rained. . .er. . .was ethereal) with stops after on the east side of New Zealand at Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, and Auckland. We then rented a car for a couple days and went to Waitomo Caves and saw the geothermal stuff at Rotorua. Along the way we saw lots of birds (including blue and yellow-eyed penguins), seals, sea lions, miniature dolphins, and plenty of wild scenic. We also went on a jet boat ride, rode in giant atvs around up and down the steep coast of New Zealand, and had a very nice time.
